Banjul,
the capital of The Gambia, is a ten minute car ride away
and is a must to visit during your stay, but then return
to the peace and tranquility of this oasis hotel.
In pre-independence days it was called Bathurst
and is now the government headquarters. Situated on St Mary's
Island where the Gambia River flows into the Atlantic Ocean.
It was founded by the British in 1816 as a trading post and
a centre for suppressing the slave trade. The Gateway to the
capital Banjul, is signified by a magnificent archway standing
majestically to greet all who visit. Built in 1996, it commands
views across the city and is a symbol of the country's new
direction.
Banjul International Airport has boasted one of
the finest runways in the world. "Good enough for the
Space Shuttle" has been the motto as it was indeed developed
by NASA and the United States Government to serve as an emergency
landing site for the space programme due to its strategic
location. Now it is served by the new airport terminal building,
opened in October 1997, designed and equipped with modern
facilities to an International standard including mechanised
baggage handling.
Make sure you check out the beautiful filigree
jewellery , batiks and other crafts available around the
city. |
